Background
I spent most of my career as an art director and graphic designer, on brand and campaign work for drinks brands and infrastructure clients. That is where the craft came from: type, composition, and knowing when something is finished.
In 2022 I moved to London for a year and it changed what I noticed. I stopped seeing visual briefs and started seeing broken workflows. The clearest one was cleaning team managers running entire operations out of WhatsApp threads, with no tool built for teams that size. That observation became Shiftsly.
Three products went live after that, each with authentication, payment providers, databases and scheduled jobs, and eventually users who noticed when something broke.
How I work
On every project here there was nobody to hand off to, so the interface decisions and the schema decisions landed on the same desk. Those two constrain each other constantly.
When I propose a flow I already know roughly what it costs to implement, where the state has to live, and what happens when the network call fails. That comes from building what I design instead of only specifying it.
It also means I have been on the wrong end of my own decisions in production, which teaches faster than any critique.
